CARES Act - Federal Stimulus Bill

Last updated on 4/1/2020 at 2:45 pm

Note:: We want to provide information as we know it at this time. We are still awaiting guidance from the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) so this information is subject to change. We will update as we know of any changes.

  • If you were eligible for unemployment before the federal legislation passed, please apply as soon as you can at https://dwd.wisconsin.gov/ui.

  • If you were not eligible for unemployment before the CARES Act (Federal Stimulus Bill) was passed we are asking you to wait* to file because our system is not yet set up to accept your application. We are waiting on additional guidance from USDOL. We expect those changes to be complete by mid-to late-April. We understand how important it is to get these payments to you as quickly as possible, and we are doing everything we can to get you the help you need.

*It is important to note that benefits will start from the time you became eligible for unemployment, not from the time your application is submitted or approved. This is also true of the additional $600 per week.

  • This legislation will likely help many people, including people who typically don't qualify for unemployment benefits. We are evaluating the details and waiting for additional guidance from the U.S. Department of Labor.

  • Eligibility for benefits is expanded to include many Wisconsinites, including many self-employed people. An additional $600 per week will be available through July 31, 2020. If you exhaust your benefits you may be eligible for an additional 13 weeks. This includes people who were already on unemployment as well as those who are newly eligible.

I heard an additional $600 will be added to my unemployment payment each week. When will that start?

  • We are working as quickly as possible to update our technology to ensure everyone who is eligible gets the full amount they are owed. We are also waiting on some additional guidance from the U.S. Department of Labor to make some final changes. That means it will take a couple of weeks to update, with a target launch of mid-to late-April. Any weeks claimed that are eligible for the additional $600 payment will be made once the technology is updated. We understand how important it is to get these payments to you as quickly as possible, and we are doing everything we can to get you the help you need.
